The Roadie - Dodie Pettit

He's been on the road for so long now
That he doesn't know where home is
Thought he'd come out for all the right reasons
But now the money is all there is
And its become a way of life now
Packing the show from town to town
Just when you seem to be settling in
Its closing night and you're gone again

But he dreams someday of settling down
And finding a girl on the right side of town
Someone to keep his feet on the ground
And help him through the night
But how do you step down off that wheel
When you've forgotten the normal way to feel
And how can you ever go back home
When you've lost your life out here
On the road

Slipping past the crown to his station
Tucked behind computer lights
Floating past the distant elation
That used to send him home every night
But somewhere the plans he had shifted
Along with the sands of time
So now he just lets himself drift and
Tries to not wonder why

And he dreams someday of settling down
And finding a girl on the right side of town
Someone to keep his feet on the ground
And help him through the night
But how do you step down off that wheel
When you've forgotten the normal way to feel
And how can you ever go back home
When you've lost your life out here
On the road

He drinks at night with Vic the old timer
Who's been out for 10 or 12 years
Confiding by the third or the fourth one
That he's realized most of his fears
But Vic says its not such a bad life
And someone's got to move the show
So he's learned to let go
And to take things slow
Cause things might change who knows

And he dreams someday of settling down
And finding a girl on the right side of town
Someone to keep his feet on the ground
And help him through the night
But how do you step down off that wheel
When you've forgotten the normal way to feel
And how can you ever go back home
When you've lost your life out here
On the road
